Moodle is a learning platform that enables faculty to engage easily with learners in an interactive online space. In this space, faculty can conduct quizzes, host discussion forums, post resources, accept and grade assignments, and more. Below is a list of resources to aid in your use of Moodle and the integration of its many capabilities to enhance your learning experience.

Start of Semester Reminders

As we approach the start of the Fall semester, we offer these thoughts for faculty:

Course Visibility

Spring 2026 courses will remain visible to students until the start of July, although faculty can also hide the course earlier if you like.

Fall 2026 courses are now available for faculty to build. All courses and enrollments are synchronized with Banner overnight and enrollments are updated when each user logs in. Your new courses will not be visible to your students until you (or Libraries’ Electronic Reserves staff) change that setting. See our Getting Started Guide for instructions on how to make your courses visible.

Workshops / Support

A number of Moodle and related workshops will be offered during the coming months. Workshops include: Getting Started with Moodle, Tell me about Moodle Activities & Resources and Making Sense of the Moodle Gradebook. For dates and times, see the workshop offerings. We are also most willing to meet individually with you to hear about how Moodle can better meet your instructional needs, discuss features, or work together on new course activities. Contact us through the Colgate Service Desk (itshelp@colgate.edu).

Additional self-help resources are available on the Faculty page.

Course Setup

New faculty or faculty new to Moodle may want to review the Faculty Quick Start Guide or Faculty FAQ pages.

Merging Courses (Self-Serve). If you’d like to use a single Moodle course for multiple sections of a class, see instructions for merging course sections. You may also request ITS to combine courses for you by emailing itshelp@colgate.edu and specifying the courses that you want to be merged.

Course Content Reuse (Self-Serve). See detailed instructions for reusing content from a previous course to a new course. Alternatively, you may request the migration be done by ITS by completing the Moodle Content Course Reuse Request web form.

Gradebook Setup. The Moodle Gradebook can be complicated; please contact us if you want help configuring your course gradebook.

Electronic Course Reserves. The Colgate Libraries use your Moodle course for Electronic Course Reserves. See the eReserves web site for details.

External Tool Updates

Two of our external tools (Gradescope & Perusall) were updated Summer 2026 to provide the most up to date support.

The Gradescope update provides improved security, more reliable roster and grade synchronization and a streamlined connection between Moodle and Gradescope. For instructors, the process for preparing a new course remains the same. For some instructors, there may be one additional step in reusing course content from a previous course. Our Gradescope instructions have been updated to reflect the update.

The Perusall update provides improvements to roster synchronization, grade synchronization and assignment access between Moodle and Perusall. If you have an existing Perusall course that you would like to reuse, reference Perusall’s resource on how to Transition your course from LTI 1.1 to LTI 1.3.

If you encounter any questions on either tool, please reach out at itshelp@colgate.edu.

Sensus/Access & Accessibility

Sensus/Access Document Conversion is a standard Moodle course activity that appears in every course. This document conversion utility allows faculty and students to submit course documents for conversion to alternative formats such as MP3 audio, plain text, searchable PDF, and others. SensusAccess is used frequently by students, so please do not delete the SensusAccess activity from your course home page.

Support

We are most willing to meet individually with you to hear about how Moodle can better meet your instructional needs, discuss features, or work together on new course activities. Please feel free to contact the Colgate Service Desk at ITShelp@colgate.edu .
